The Arewa PDP Unity Forum (APUF) has condemned the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ibrahim Abdullahi, for what it termed “reckless and disrespectful comments” directed at former Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.
In a statement issued on Friday and signed by its National President, Dr. Maikanti Adamu, the forum stated that Abdullahi’s remarks on national television were unbecoming of a senior party official. It cautioned that such public disparagement of respected party leaders threatens internal unity as the 2027 general elections approach.
“Dr. Abdullahi’s comments were both unfortunate and unnecessary. To label a two-term governor who secured victory for the PDP in the last election as someone ‘carrying a bag’ for anyone is an insult not only to Ugwuanyi but also to the collective history and legacy of our party,” Adamu stated.
The group emphasized that Ugwuanyi’s achievements in Enugu, along with his diplomatic efforts during the 2023 elections, were crucial in maintaining the PDP's political significance in the South-East when the party faced challenges in other regions.
“While many states lost their PDP dominance, Enugu remained resilient under Ugwuanyi’s leadership. Those who were unable to retain even their local governments for the party should be the last to question his loyalty or stature,” Adamu asserted.
The Arewa PDP Unity Forum reminded the party leadership that prominent figures deserve respect regardless of current political dynamics, asserting that Abdullahi’s comments demonstrated arrogance and exacerbated internal divisions.
“Our national officers should act as unifiers, not as sources of insult. If we continue to mock our own members, how can we expect the Nigerian populace to regard us as a credible government-in-waiting?” Adamu questioned.
The forum urged the PDP National Working Committee to advise its spokespersons against making statements that diminish the contributions of past leaders, emphasizing that discipline and mutual respect are vital for party unity.
“The PDP has endured challenges for over two decades because it embraces diverse perspectives. The Deputy National Publicity Secretary should concentrate on fortifying structures that secure electoral victories, rather than attacking those who have already made significant contributions,” he concluded.
The APUF further reaffirmed its respect for former governors, legislators, and party elders nationwide, characterizing them as “living pillars of the PDP whose experience should not be overlooked for the sake of media soundbites.”
