ANTHONY JOSHUA is being prepared for a short-notice comeback fight in Ghana – and may return on the UNDERCARD.

He was initially scheduled to return in early 2026, but promoter Eddie Hearn hinted at the possibility of a late comeback fight before the year ends.

Hearn has since announced a December 20 event in Accra – featuring a main fight between Craig Richards and Dan Azeez.

This event in Ghana has emerged as a leading candidate for Joshua's return.

However, Hearn indicated that Joshua is unlikely to headline his next fight.

He told Boxing Social : “There won't be a major fight this year.

“It wouldn’t be a headliner, it wouldn’t be a pay-per-view; there’s no need to complain about it, as it can simply be part of an established event that’s already on sale – so there would be no complaints.

“This is part of the process to ensure he is 100 percent prepared for the significant challenge ahead.

“If he fights this year, he won’t be headlining. We want to work quietly and improve, getting into the right mindset to be completely ready.

“This is about development and gaining some activity. It’s not focused on the financial aspect, but rather on our progress.”

Hearn still aims for Tyson Fury, 37, to finally face Joshua, 36, next year.

Meanwhile, Ghana has lifted its temporary ban on boxing – which was enacted following two deaths linked to the sport within six months.

The National Sports Authority of Ghana initially stated that the decision was a “necessary measure to protect lives, maintain the sport's integrity, and ensure its future.”

However, the NSA has now confirmed that professional boxing can resume – clearing the way for Matchroom’s inaugural event in Africa.

A statement read: “The Authority anticipates a vibrant resurgence of professional boxing and encourages both local and international promoters and investors to bring international bouts and collaborations to Ghana under these improved standards.”
