A group of frustrated youths in Bida, Niger State, attacked the convoy of Governor Umar Bago on Sunday, damaging several vehicles and injuring a senior government official after a cash distribution event fell short of expectations.
According to sources who spoke to DAILY POST, the governor had previously assured residents of financial gifts in anticipation of the upcoming local government elections, encouraging them to gather on Friday to collect the funds.
However, chaos ensued when only a small number of individuals received assistance, leading to widespread disappointment and anger among the crowd.
“The governor promised that everyone would receive money, but only a handful got anything. That’s when the youths began shouting and attacking,” a local resident shared.
The mob reportedly threw stones and sachets of water at the governor’s convoy, damaging at least six official vehicles. The incident took place near the town hall in Bida.
Witnesses reported that the furious youths subsequently vandalized campaign billboards belonging to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the governor throughout the town.
“The people were extremely upset because they waited for him to keep his promise. When he didn’t, they lost control,” another eyewitness stated.
The unrest on Sunday followed a tragic stampede during a previous cash-sharing event in Bida, linked to the governor’s political outreach, which resulted in the death of a young girl and left several others injured.
As of the time of reporting, authorities have not issued an official statement regarding the latest incident.
