ANDY Burnham suggested private landlords should be forced to sell their rental homes just months before becoming PM.
He called for more “public control” of housing so that properties could be made energy-efficient “quickly” to meet green targets.

Speaking at an eco-summit in March when he was Mayor of Greater Manchester, Mr Burnham said: “We can, if necessary, take homes out of the private rented sector and put them into the public housing stock so that we can give people homes that are cheaper to rent and cheaper to run.”
Shadow minister Andrew Bowie said: “Under the guise of Net Zero, wants to send officers of the state to your door and take your home.
“We should just make electricity cheap and let people choose what works for them, rather than threatening repossession.”
Sources said Mr Burnham was specifically talking about Manchester and that his ideas at the time are not government policy.
Under Mr Burnham, Greater Manchester set a target of carbon neutrality by 2038 which includes steps to improve homes.
He also previously called for private rental properties that do not meet legal requirements in the Decent Homes Standard to be bought by councils through compulsory purchase orders.
