Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State on Monday accused certain politicians in the state of spending the night in the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in anticipation of the upcoming governorship election.
Soludo stated that these politicians are attempting to persuade the electoral body to manipulate the results of next month’s election.
The governor made these remarks during a panel discussion in Abuja on the topic, ‘Innovation in Electoral Technology 2015-2025’.
According to Soludo: “Should we, because of events that occurred in a specific polling unit, declare the entire election as disastrous? No. We all need to address these issues together.
“As politicians, those of us currently in office, I’ve had the opportunity to experience the other side. This is my first term in politics, and I consider it a privilege to have designed and worked on these processes, witnessing both the positives and negatives. I can assure you, the differences between where we are now and where we were are as stark as night and day.
“Politicians must strive for improvement; in Nigeria, there is a prevailing notion that nothing can occur without some form of deceit or trickery involved. As we approach our election next month, we find ourselves in this situation.
“Some politicians are spending nights at INEC because they lack faith in the system. While we are actively campaigning, they are preoccupied with other schemes.
“They do not believe that the people can simply cast their votes, have them counted, and have the results announced. Instead, they assume there must be some trickery involved.
“Thus, we politicians have significant work ahead of us.”
