THIS mug has weathered all storms.

American diners are not only known for their classic old school interiors, but they’re also extremely popular for their thick, bright white mug with broad handles.

But the real reason behind this mug’s design didn’t have anything to do with style, but the surrounding weather conditions.

Besides the obvious difficulties of World War II, the U.S. Navy faced a significant problem during that time – and it had everything to do with their coffee mugs.

In the ‘40s, the Navy sent out a request for bids to U.S. companies that could create a coffee mug that would withstand the test of slinging ships.

Rough seas meant ordinary coffee cups slid across tables, spilled, or shattered on deck during particularly stormy weather.

Victor Insulators , the manufacturing company located in Victor, New York, responded to the request, ultimately winning the contract.

The solution was genius – a thick, heavy porcelain mug that wouldn’t topple easily, kept coffee hot, and could take a beating without breaking.

The first versions didn’t even have handles, which was one less thing to snap off in turbulent waters.

Over time, the design evolved into the curved, handled mug we know today, but the DNA of durability remained.

Maybe it’s because they feel like a piece of history in your hand, or maybe it’s just because coffee tastes better in them, but after the war, Victor’s mugs found a new home in diners across the US.

Their sturdy build and heat‑retaining porcelain made them perfect for busy restaurants serving endless refills of coffee.

Soon, they became the unofficial standard across the country.

Because the mugs are so beloved and so durable, they’re also notorious for being among the most stolen items from diners nationwide.

So next time you sip from one of those chunky white cups, remember – it’s not just a mug, but a design born from stormy seas, perfected for everyday comfort, and cemented as a symbol of Americana.
