A public policy analyst, Abba Kaka, has criticized the ‘bow and go’ approach employed by the Senate during the ongoing ambassadorial screening in the National Assembly.
In an interview on ‘Prime Time’, a program on Arise Television that was monitored by DAILY POST on Thursday, Kaka expressed that observing the ambassadorial screening committee diminished his confidence in the process.
He emphasized that the committee should allocate more time for each nominee, asserting that the committee chairman is not acting professionally.
“There is indeed a lot of controversy surrounding Mr. Reno Omokri. Given his previous statements and the apparent reversal in his position, claiming that the President has forgiven him and so forth.
“However, the necessary actions must be taken, not only for the foreign governments whose ambassadors we do not yet know, but also for the Nigerian public.”
“These nominees, particularly those with controversial backgrounds, should be given adequate time for senators to question them and ascertain their true positions.
“If today you hold one view and tomorrow you adopt another, then issues of integrity and trust come into play. This is why the committee is tasked with this responsibility in the first place.
The ‘bow and go’ practice is inappropriate, especially considering the controversies surrounding some of these young nominees. We need to understand precisely who they are and their intentions, as they will represent the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
“What I observed in the Senate has left me feeling less assured. There is a pressing need to spend more time on each nominee because foreign ambassadors are observing.
“They may not know who is going where, but they are watching, just as Nigerians are watching,” he stated.
