POWER-hungry AI data centres want almost twice as much electricity as the whole UK uses in a year.

Tech firms have asked for 73 gigawatts of grid connections for planned giant server farms, according to watchdog Ofgem.

If run flat out, they would guzzle 639 terawatt hours a year — almost double the 323TWh Britain used in all of 2025.

It is equivalent to plugging in 200million extra homes.
