Youths on Tuesday staged a protest against epileptic power supply in Yola, Adamawa State capital.

The youths directed their anger at the authority which supplies power to Adamawa and some other states, the Yola Electricity Distribution Company, YEDC, which has its headquarters in the city.

The protesters, rising as members of Movement for the Transformation of Nigeria, MOTION, barricaded YEDC’s corporate headquarters, decrying what they described as persistent and worsening electricity supply across Adamawa State.

The protesters blocked all entrances to the YEDC complex, holding placards with various inscriptions condemning the erratic power situation.

They also halted operations at the facility.

Speaking during the protest, the State Contact Person of MOTION, Musa Andrew, said members were mobilised to express dissatisfaction with the continued failure of the YEDC to provide reliable electricity to users in the state.

He said the group had made several attempts through letters and other engagements to draw the attention of the company’s management to the deteriorating situation but received no response.

Andrew said his group had interacted with residents across Jambutu, Numan, Demsa, Yola South and Yola North LGAs, all of who shared similar experiences of prolonged irregular power supply.

He lamented, “Where I live, we are classified under Band B, which is supposed to enjoy between 8 to 12 hours of electricity daily. Unfortunately, we barely get two hours in very short intervals of about 30 minutes.

“There is practically no light in Adamawa. Only a few areas on Band A receive somewhat consistent power. If YEDC cannot deliver on its mandate, then the Federal Government should revoke its licence immediately.”

The leadership of the YEDC did not speak to the protesting MOTION members; and the company’s Communications Officer, Mrs. Blessing Tunoh, did not respond to media enquiries regarding the protest.
