Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja has rescheduled the terrorism trial of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, to October 16, 2025.
The delay was due to the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) failing to present its report regarding Kanu’s health status to the court.
During the previous adjournment, Justice Omotosho instructed the NMA President to form a panel of medical experts to investigate the alleged decline in the defendant's health.
The medical examination aims to determine whether the medical facilities at the Department of State Services (DSS) Headquarters can adequately provide for Kanu's treatment or if he should be transferred to the National Hospital, as his legal team has requested.
The report will also assess Kanu's fitness to continue with his trial.
However, during Wednesday's hearing, DSS attorney Mr. Suraj S’aad, SAN, informed Justice Omotosho that the medical board conveyed that the report was not ready for submission as instructed by the court.
The senior lawyer then requested a one-week adjournment to allow the NMA medical board to finalize its investigation.
With no objections to the adjournment request, Justice Omotosho set October 16, 2025, as the date for the board to submit its report and determine the subsequent steps in the proceedings.
