Police carA “SERIOUS collision” has caused one of the UK’s main motorways to be partly closed in both directions.
National Highways has confirmed that the A1 in is closed in both directions between the B1340 (Denwick) and the A1167 (Berwick-Upon-Tweed) due to a collision.

A collision is underway at the scene and the road is expected to remain closed for several hours.
Traffic is currently being diverted via local routes.
National Highways said in a statement: “The A1 in Northumberland is closed in both directions between the B1340 (Denwick) and the A1167 (Berwick-Upon-Tweed) due to a collision.
“Accident investigations are on-going, and Northumberland Police have confirmed the road will remain closed until this afternoon. Clear up works are expected to take place at 1pm.”
A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called to a road traffic incident on the A1 near Berwick Upon Tweed this morning (2 November) at 05:06am.
“We dispatched two ambulance crews and one clinical team leader to the scene.”
Diversions currently in place:
Traffic heading northbound
- Exit A1 using Fenwick junction onto B6353 and travel west for approximately 7km.
- At Borroor, turn north onto 86525 and follow north for approximately 8km, passing through Ancroft.
- Arrive at A1 Scremerston Hill junction on B6525 and rejoin A1.
Traffic heading southbound
- Exit A1 using Scremerston Hill interchange onto B6525 southbound
- Follow B6525 south for approximately 8km through Ancroft to Barmoor.
- At Barmoor turn east onto B6353 and follow for approximately 7km to Fenwick Junction.
- Rejoin A1 using Fenwick Junction.
