Kebbi State has strengthened its security framework with the graduation of 819 National Forest Guards, trained to safeguard forest reserves and combat criminal activities.
The guards successfully completed an intensive nine-week training program in the Kalgo Local Government Area, which focused on early warning systems, patrol operations, ambush tactics, and the handling of AK-47 rifles.
This training was overseen by the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force, and the military, demonstrating a unified security approach.
During the ceremony on Saturday, Deputy Governor Umar Tafida urged communities and traditional leaders to work together with the newly trained personnel, stressing that local support is crucial in the fight against banditry and forest-related crimes.
Representing the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, Commissioner of Police Umar Hadejia confirmed that the guards would be promptly deployed to vulnerable forest corridors and areas lacking governance.
Kebbi is one of seven states selected for the pilot phase of the National Forest Guard initiative, with Arewa, Augie, Dandi, and Danko-Wasagu Local Government Areas designated for the initial deployment.
Tafida highlighted that the forest guards would enhance existing security formations and help prevent criminals from using forest reserves as hideouts or operational bases.
As the deployment commences, residents are optimistic that the increased security presence will disrupt bandit networks and restore safety to rural communities that have long been threatened by criminal activities.
