The Lagos State Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, George Ashiru, has said the party is prepared to challenge the long-standing dominance of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos State ahead of the 2027 governorship and House of Assembly elections.
Speaking to DAILY POST, Ashiru said the party has been intensively mobilising and building momentum across Lagos, highlighting its growing membership and grassroots presence.
“Well, since we’ve unveiled the coalition since July last year, we have been on a marathon mobilization, getting new members as well as integrating our partner members who have come in from other parties, from Labour, from the PDP, from APC, from SDP, Accord. Various members of other parties that have decided that we are stronger together, who have left their parties to be part of ADC,” he said.
He emphasised that the party’s activities have been consistent and widespread across all local governments in Lagos.
“And so, in all the local governments, we have been having various activities. Just yesterday, three local governments had activities that had over 400 members in attendance in each of them. And that’s been going on nonstop,” he added.
Ashiru stressed that ADC’s growing momentum has made it the most active political party in Lagos over the past several months.
“We are probably the most active political party in Lagos in terms of activity in the past seven to eight or nine months. So, we’re not stopping. We have been moving and we will keep moving, and that is part of the momentum we are building. And we have not even had our congresses and primaries yet; we don’t have candidates yet. So, this is all just organically driven.” He disclosed
Addressing the question of APC’s long-standing control in the state, Ashiru pointed to recent electoral trends and voter sentiment as evidence that the ruling party’s dominance can be challenged.
“Well, they lost the last presidential election in Lagos, so it means it’s possible for David to defeat Goliath. It’s possible for Moses to defeat Pharaoh.” He noted
He added that the party’s expanding grassroots presence, coupled with voter dissatisfaction, positions ADC to make significant inroads in the coming election.
“So as long as the policies of government are anti-people, overall the majority of people are going to come out to vote against the ruling party. It’s as simple as that, it’s simple common sense, political common sense,” he further stressed
Ashiru further highlighted that ADC already has representation in the National Assembly and Lagos State House of Assembly, which he said strengthens the party’s credibility and readiness for a wider electoral challenge.
“And by the way, we have in ADC now four elected members of the House of Reps and one member of the House of Assembly in the party even as we speak. So what we’re doing now is looking forward to retaining it in 2027 and to expanding it further. This is what ADC is bringing to the table,” he said.
With continued mobilisation, integration of new members, and a focus on engaging Lagosians, Ashiru said the ADC is ready to break the APC’s political stronghold in the state.
Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the APC would complete his second-term tenure in 2027, and another candidate would contest under the APC banner.
However, both APC and ADC are yet to unveil their candidates.
According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), parties’ primaries are scheduled to hold from 23rd April 2026 and end on 30th May 2026, by which all candidates are expected to be officially unveiled.
