A professor at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Prof. Jonah Onuoha, stated that Mr. Peter Obi’s shift to the African Democratic Party (ADC) may not alter the political landscape leading up to the 2027 general elections.
Onuoha, who teaches in the Department of Political Science, made these comments during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Nsukka on Friday.
He was responding to Obi’s announcement to leave the Labour Party and officially join the ADC on December 31, 2025.
The political scientist noted that Obi’s impressive performance in the 2023 elections, particularly in the South-East where the Labour Party secured several seats, is unlikely to be replicated in 2027.
He explained that the Obidient movement, which was pivotal in driving the unexpected victories in 2023, has diminished and would be challenging to revive before the upcoming elections.
“I do not anticipate that Obi’s transition to the ADC will change the narrative of electoral success in the South-East or nationally in 2027,” he remarked.
“The Obidient spirit that fueled the momentum in 2023 has significantly faded and will be tough to bring back before the general elections,” he added.
Onuoha mentioned that many Nigerians felt disheartened after their expectations in 2023 were not met, which has weakened the movement's impact and enthusiasm.
He contended that the decline of the Obidient movement partly clarifies Obi’s choice to switch from the Labour Party to the ADC.
Onuoha indicated that the 2027 presidential race would primarily involve the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the ADC, emphasizing that “the party with the more robust candidate will emerge victorious.”
However, he urged politicians to focus on fostering national unity and to refrain from actions and statements that could incite political tension.
