Here are some handy tips to help you overcome the cold.

SOCKS ON WIPERS

The morning commute can be stressful enough without adding extra time to scrape ice off your car's windscreen.

To keep your wipers in good condition and prevent the rubber from freezing to the glass, place a pair of old socks over them.

BUBBLE WRAP WINDOWS

During freezing temperatures, keeping your home warm can become expensive.

Instead of cranking up the heat, apply bubble wrap to single-glazed windows with a spray of water.

This method traps heat surprisingly well and can be easily removed.

SALT IN BOOTS

Drying snow-soaked shoes and boots on radiators can lead to puddles.

Place a small bowl of salt inside your boots overnight.

This will absorb moisture faster than newspaper, and your boots will be ready to wear again by the next day.

SPRAY CAR SEALS

To prevent the rubber seals of car doors from freezing shut, apply a little non-stick spray on them.

This trick helps avoid breaking the door handle—or straining yourself—while trying to get inside.

KITTY LITTER

Don't get caught off guard when the weather turns.

Keep a bag of non-clumping cat litter in the trunk of your car.

If you get stuck on your driveway, pour it under the drive wheel where it will serve as instant gravel for traction.

It’s also useful for your driveway or road.

RICE AND WARM

Fill a sock with uncooked rice or dried peas, tie the end, and microwave for two minutes.

This will provide you with immediate warmth for your bed, just before you crawl under the covers.

FOIL THE COLD

While radiators can distribute heat into a room, the heat is often absorbed by the wall behind them.

Secure kitchen foil behind radiators to reflect all the heat back into the room.

This will also save you money as your rooms will heat up faster and stay warm for longer.

SANDPAPER SHOES

To enhance grip on snow and ice, try rubbing the soles of your footwear with sandpaper or a nail file.

Experts also suggest investing in grip spray, but a budget-friendly option is hairspray.

This will make the soles tacky, but it’s just a temporary solution and will need to be reapplied.

THROW IN THE TOWEL

Weatherproof draughty doors and windows with caulk or weatherstrips.

These solutions also enhance your home’s energy efficiency and prevent moisture from seeping in.
