Mr. Idris Alimi, a publisher based in Ibadan, has stated that the year 2025 has posed significant challenges for entrepreneurs nationwide, claiming that many government policies are detrimental to the publishing sector.
He noted that various policies introduced by the federal government over the past year, combined with foreign exchange instability and inflation, have made it increasingly difficult for some business owners to sustain their operations.
Alimi took this opportunity to urge governments at all levels to provide support for entrepreneurs throughout the country.
As the Chief Executive Officer of Max African Publishers, he made this appeal during the firm's year-end celebration on Thursday in Ibadan.
During the event, he shared with journalists that the government policies enacted this past year have hindered many business owners from staying afloat.
Alimi remarked, “I must emphasize that this past year has been extremely challenging for numerous entrepreneurs due to inflation, government policies, and cash flow issues. The availability of cash has not met expectations, and many of the government policies are not beneficial to us. Most of these policies are unfavorable to those of us in the publishing industry.
“Some of these policies do not encourage us. Many of us are struggling to cope. The year 2025 has indeed been very difficult. In January, I found myself contemplating how we would manage. We constantly think about salaries, overheads, and production costs. We wonder if we should prioritize production materials or diesel. Our only day of rest is Sunday. When we calculate our costs and other expenses, it becomes overwhelming.
“I have come to realize that it is only by God's grace that we are managing to address these challenges. We are facing numerous obstacles this year. I want to express my gratitude to all the staff who lead our efforts. We are enduring many hardships. Today's gathering is meant to motivate our staff and encourage them to increase their efforts in the future.
The chairman of the occasion, Supol Ayodele Ayiti, in his address, urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings, particularly during the evening hours.
He stated, “There are many occurrences happening in the country. Always be observant and aware of your environment. Stay alert.”
