Zamfara: Factional lawmakers defy pressure, vow to continue legislative activities

Published on May 04, 2025 at 02:37 PM

A group of nine lawmakers from the Zamfara State House of Assembly operating as a parallel legislative body has vowed to continue sitting, despite what they describe as intimidation and harassment by the state government.

In a statement signed by Hon. Aliyu Ango Kagara, who represents Talata-Mafara South Constituency, the lawmakers expressed their commitment to representing their constituents and fulfilling their legislative mandate.

“We shall continue to work in the spheres of our mandate as lawmakers and representatives of our people. No amount of intimidation from the government or political manipulation through the courts will derail us,”; the group said.

The lawmakers, led by Hon. Bashar Aliyu Gummi, alleged that some of them had been suspended for over a year without due process.

They also claimed to have evidence of planned attacks on them and their families, which they said have been reported to security agencies.

They accused the administration of Governor Dauda Lawal of attempting to undermine them through politically motivated court actions, even as the matter remains pending before the Appeal Court in Sokoto.

“We are aware that the government recently went to a lower court to seek our arrest, despite ongoing reconciliation efforts by some former Assembly leaders,”; the statement added.

The lawmakers said they remain resolute in defending constitutional governance and will not be silenced by threats or political pressure.
