A group operating under the banner of “Plateau Fulani Peace Builders” (PFPC) has initiated a sensitization campaign and advocacy to encourage its community to uphold peace and work towards harmonious coexistence with their neighbors and host communities as the festive Yuletide season approaches.

The organization, which expressed its commitment during an emergency meeting in Jos on Wednesday, emphasized the necessity for both the Fulani people and the indigenous communities to coexist peacefully.

Reflecting on the tragic events of December 2023, when armed individuals believed to be Fulani militias attacked more than 17 communities in Bokkos and Barkin Ladi LGAs, resulting in over 300 fatalities, the PFPC asserted that such occurrences must never happen again under any circumstances.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Aminu Salisu, the group announced that it will launch an extensive awareness campaign, reaching out to various communities to engage both Fulani herdsmen and local residents, highlighting the significance of peace and unity.

“The significance of peace and harmonious coexistence cannot be overstated,” Salisu remarked.

“The devastating event of December 2023, which saw over 300 lives lost in simultaneous assaults, alongside over 500 injuries and numerous villages destroyed, remains vivid in our memories.

“Contrary to popular belief, both communities were impacted during the crisis. Following that, there have been numerous incidents of violence involving both sides, resulting in further loss of life.”

Salisu explained that the purpose of the Fulani Peace Builders is to act as a mediator between the Fulani people, who are often viewed as the aggressors, and the locals, who are frequently seen as the victims.

“Our intention is transparent and devoid of political motives. Many Fulani individuals are disheartened by the ongoing conflict in Plateau State that has persisted for over 25 years, and we aim to facilitate dialogue among our people to embrace peace, especially as Christmas and New Year approach,” Salisu stated.

Salisu added that the initiative will be carried out in collaboration with community and youth leaders from both groups, with the hope that their humble efforts will be acknowledged and not misconstrued.

“We desire peace and want our people to coexist harmoniously. There is no substitute for peaceful coexistence, and this is what we aim to achieve,” he concluded.
