Youth leaders in Nigeria have dismissed the threat of military intervention from the President of the United States regarding allegations of Christian genocide.
The Emerging Leaders Forum of Nigeria (ELFON), which includes representatives from various youth organizations such as the Arewa Youth Movement, Ohanaeze Youth Federation, Oduduwa Youth Parliament, National Association of Nigerian Students, Niger Delta Youth Front, and the Middle Belt Youth Forum, issued this statement in a press release on Wednesday.
The statement, signed by Godstime Chukwubuikem Samuel, President of ELFON, emphasized that Donald Trump should pursue dialogue and honor Nigeria's sovereignty if he genuinely aims to assist in addressing security issues.
Part of the statement read, “We wish to express our opposition to any military intervention in our country. We encourage President Donald Trump to collaborate with our President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on effective ways to support our Nigerian Military in the fight against terrorism, banditry, and other social vices."
“We recognize the role assigned to the United States by the United Nations Convention on Counter-terrorism; however, Nigeria is a sovereign nation, and we can address our challenges in our own way."
“As the emerging leaders of our beloved nation, Nigeria, we want to caution that now is not the time for political games. Any attempt to distract our President, Bola Tinubu, from governance in any form will face strong opposition from the majority of us, the citizens."
“Furthermore, we urge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to establish a youth directorate within all regional development commissions to enhance youth development initiatives across all geopolitical zones of our country."
“Everyone must contribute to achieving a better Nigeria, regardless of our ethnicities, positions, regions, or religious beliefs."
“Security agencies must take action against those who sponsor terrorism and banditry in Nigeria immediately.
