Wrexham star Ollie Rathbone has disclosed that he nearly retired after a severe injury setback disrupted his season.

It was a firm conversation with his parents that encouraged him to change his mindset.

Rathbone, 29, suffered an ankle injury in pre-season that kept him out for five months.

This was a heartbreaking setback for the midfielder, who had just been honored as ‘Player of the Season’ following their promotion.

His stoppage-time equalizer at home earlier this month—during his first league match of the season—made the moment even sweeter.

He shared insights about his recent journey in a LinkedIn post, detailing how close he came to giving up entirely.

Rathbone wrote: “The time [out injured] has been by far the most challenging period of my career, as I struggled to regain full fitness, facing setback after setback while being out of the team.

“I despised the situation I found myself in, felt sorry for myself, wallowed in self-pity, and complained to anyone who would listen about how unfairly I had been treated.

“One afternoon, I told my parents how frustrated I was and how close I was to completely quitting. They looked at me and said, ‘Oliver, that’s not who you are, and it’s certainly not who we are.’

“They made me promise that regardless of the circumstances, I would remain positive, give my all, and ensure I was prepared for my opportunity when it arrived.

“The fact that they were there to witness that goal made it even more special; it only happened because of their support.”

Rathbone has yet to start a Championship game for Wrexham, but he is giving manager Phil Parkinson plenty to consider with his performances off the bench.

He scored another crucial goal at home on Monday, netting Wrexham’s second in a 2-1 victory.

The Red Dragons are currently 11th in the table, just four points shy of the playoff positions, as former Rochdale and Rotherham star Rathbone aims for a more significant role as the season progresses.
