Published on May 01, 2025 at 10:54 AM

Brazilian nun, Inah Canabarro Lucas, the world’s oldest person, passed away at 116 years old, just months after becoming the oldest person globally.

Her death was announced on Wednesday by her religious congregation and longevity records.

The Congregation of Teresian Sisters in Porto Alegre, Brazil, where Lucas passed away expressed gratitude for her lifelong the dedication and devotion.

Lucas, born on June 8, 1908 became the world’s oldest person in January of Japanese woman, Tomiko Itooka passing at 116.

She dedicated her life to spirituality, becoming a nun in 1934, at the age of 26,.

Her remarkable life drew attention from longevity experts and religious communities alike.

LongeviQuest mentioned that Lucas was born frail and her survival initially doubted by many.

Despite those early odds, Canabarro lived for over a century, often attributing her long life to her faith.

“He is the secret of life. He is the secret of everything,”; she once said, referring to God.

In 2018, on her 110th birthday, she received a papal blessing from Pope Francis, who himself passed away last Monday at age 88.

While Lucas believed her birthdate as May 27, 1908, researchers confirm it as June 8 1908.

“Her documented birth date according to records is June 8, 1908,”; Gerontological Research Group director Robert Young stated in January.

According to LongeviQuest, Lucas ranks 15th-oldest person ever and is the second-oldest nun in history, after Lucile Randon of France, who reached to 118 and passed away in 2023.

Following the passing of the Brazilian nun Inah Lucas, Ethel Caterhama 115 year old resident of Surrey, England has become the world’s oldest living person as confirmed by the LongeviQuest database.
