In some cases, the breaks have been hugely beneficial due to the warm weather.

However, in others – particularly in Canada and at stadiums that are air conditioned – they have not been received particularly well.

Many supporters booed the first break during the nation’s on Wednesday night.

And thousands of matchgoing fans did the same during just hours later.

Boos could be heard from the crowd as players walked over to the sidelines for the interval.

Those in attendance were unhappy because the temperature inside the stadium was less than 20°C when the break took place.

Meanwhile, viewers on social media claimed there was no need for it.

One person wrote: “I know why they’re having one, but a hydration break during a game where it is raining is just ridiculous. Love the booing for it though.”

Another commented: “A cooling break and it’s raining wtf is going on.”

While a third said: “This stadium is air conditioned. It’s room temperature in here. A hydration break is not needed. Booing everywhere.”

went on to win the match 1-0 thanks to a late strike from Caleb Yirenkyi in added time.
