The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Saturday praised the members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for “standing firm and defending what is right in the state” while also expressing his support for him and President Bola Tinubu.

Wike noted that the House of Assembly members have shown trust and the capability to lead while adhering to the right principles.

He offered these commendations during a visit to the lawmakers at the House of Assembly Quarters in Port Harcourt.

Wike encouraged them to persist in standing for what is just, stating that they have distinguished themselves as a beacon of democracy in the country.

He criticized the actions that resulted in the withholding of their entitlements by Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, before the declaration of the State of Emergency.

The minister remarked: “It is essential to visit members of the State House of Assembly to express gratitude for what you have done for us and the people of Rivers State. I also want to thank you for the car gift.”

“A man’s strength, and a woman’s strength, can be influenced by their spouses. I have witnessed men who do not embody true strength and women who do not either. I mention this because without the experience of being in power, one may not realize how negatively a spouse can influence a person.”

“However, here in the State House of Assembly, all members have demonstrated that they are united in their efforts for the development of the state.”

“Having been involved in politics for a long time, I can say this is the first instance I have witnessed legislators openly declaring their principles and standing firm, proving that we are a distinct arm of government, not merely a department. There are those who are courageous enough to voice their dissent when things are amiss. Those fortunate enough to occupy your positions may resort to various means to achieve their objectives.”

“We express our gratitude to God Almighty for granting us life. We are thankful for the individuals who have helped us reach where we are today. We are truly appreciative and do not take this for granted. Many believe that money can buy everything and everyone over. I have told those willing to listen that money has its limits; when it reaches that point, it ceases to have power. Money does not move on its own; it requires someone to carry it.”

“Today, you stand out in this country as a beacon of democracy. How could elected officials be denied their entitlements simply for disagreeing with you? Your families have stood by you.”

“It would be unjust for us to reach 2026 without acknowledging those who supported you in 2025. You must express your gratitude to all who worked alongside you. Upon my arrival here, I was emotionally moved. Anyone who enters this complex would expect it to be overrun with weeds by now.”

“I am not aware of any state that can claim their state assembly quarters are as tidy as this. What does this indicate? Leadership. When you have the right leadership, everything progresses smoothly.”
