In footage at the time, could be seen falling unconscious after being caught by a vicious punch.

The ex-striker, then United and skipper, just narrowly missed hitting his head on a chair as he fell.

Appearing on Call Yourself a Fan with Alex Brooker, and Jimmy Bullard, Bardsley revealed his side of the story.

“It was just a standard Sunday at the time,” the former full-back began. “We had a couple of days off in between training and this particularly Sunday we went to The Bubble Room in Alderley Edge, which is a bar familiar to a few of the lads.

“We set out to watch a couple of the games – the half one game, the four o’clock game – and before you know it you’re probably seven, eight pints deep and one thing led to another.

“We ended up back at his house watching his wedding video, which was quite bizarre. I think he likes a singsong.”

On how their scrap began, Bardsley continued: “You’re in his house, you go with it. Before you know it, I see him come out of the kitchen with a pair of pink boxing gloves and I’m thinking ‘what’s going on here?’

“He brought another pair out and went ‘they’re for you’. I was like ‘okay’. Not a wise idea after 10, 15 pints that’s for sure.”

Rooney, now 41, could be seen lying flat on his back after the KO blow.

Asked if there was a moment of real concern, Bardsley, 41, added: “Yeah, s*** myself. He was out (cold) for a little bit.

“He was the United and England captain and we’ve got no phone signal where we are, his eyes are closed and we’re thinking ‘it’s a little bit of trouble here’.

“Anyway, he come round, I’ve got a cut lip, he’s got a broken nose or whatever it was and rest is history.”

The incident came a day after United had lost 2-1 at Swansea under .

Rooney went on to score a double in his side’s very next game, a 2-0 win over Sunderland, as United began a run of six consecutive victories.

Footage of the incident emerged just hours before United hosted Spurs in a top four race battle.

After Wazza scored in his side’s 3-0 win, he memorably mimicked the knockout as he celebrated.
