Venezuela’s acting leader, Delcy Rodríguez, has announced the establishment of a special commission aimed at securing the release of former president Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, following his ousting from power in Caracas by US forces.

Rodríguez appointed the President of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, and Foreign Minister Yván Gil as co-chairs of the commission. The Minister of Information, Freddy Ñáñez, is also part of the group.

Maduro, who is accused by US authorities of drug trafficking and terrorism, was apprehended on Saturday and transported to New York.

He is currently being detained there in anticipation of a court appearance scheduled for Monday.

In a message shared on Telegram, Rodríguez advocated for improved relations with Washington.

“We view it as essential to progress towards a balanced and respectful relationship between the US and Venezuela,” she stated, emphasizing that dialogue and cooperation are vital for mutual development.

In the meantime, Venezuela’s military has officially recognized Rodríguez as the acting president.

Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López indicated that the armed forces were acting in accordance with a Supreme Court ruling that granted her a 90-day mandate to govern the country.

He encouraged citizens to resume normal life following the US operation that resulted in Maduro’s arrest.

“The nation must adhere to its constitutional path,” Padrino remarked.

However, the defense minister condemned the operation, labeling it a “cowardly kidnapping,” and claimed that several of Maduro’s bodyguards, along with military personnel and civilians, lost their lives.

Authorities have not provided official casualty numbers.
