Unity Cup: Gusau hails Super Eagles for winning trophy

President of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, Ibrahim Gusau has expressed satisfaction with the performance of the Super Eagles at the Unity Cup invitational tournament.

Éric Chelle’s side defeated the Reggae Boys of Jamaica 5-4 on penalties in the final of the competition at the Gtech Community Stadium, Brentford, London on Saturday night.

The Super Eagles were held to a 2-2 draw by Steve Mclarens’ side after 90 minutes.

Nigeria earlier defeated perenial rivals Ghana 2-1 in the semi-final.

A number of new and fringe players make positive impact during the competition.

Gusau claimed the tournament was an opportunity for the coaches to work closely with the new players.

“First of all, that’s the essence of this type of tournament.It took us some months to put this together, and it was aimed at allowing the coach to see some new players,”; Gusau after the Super Eagles win over Jamaica

“As you know, he was appointed less than a month before the World Cup qualifiers, so he didn’t have many options but to work with the players he met on the ground.”;

The Super Eagles will now shift attention to Friday’s international friendly against Russia.
