A POPULAR beach has been evacuated and a bomb squad called in, with the public urged to avoid the area.

Lyme Regis beach has been cleared and closed to the public after a suspected ordnance was found.

A spokesperson for HM Coastguard said it had received a report of a suspected explosive on the Dorset beach around 1pm this afternoon.

They confirmed Coastguard and Dorset Police were in attendance, as well as a specialist bomb disposal squad.

The spokesman said: “A report of suspected ordnance at Lyme Regis beach was made to HM Coastguard at about 1.05pm on April 2.

“Coastguard Rescue Teams from Lyme Regis and West Bay are attending, as well as Dorset Police.

“An Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team has been sent.”

Emergency services rushed to the scene after receiving the urgent report, swiftly shutting down the area.

Pictures from the town show it was a sunny afternoon on the beach, where groups had set up on its golden sand.
