TWO escaped inmates have been apprehended by law enforcement after fleeing from prison on New Year’s Day.

Matthew Armstrong and Daniel Washbourne were on the run for a week after escaping from HMP Leyhill in South Gloucestershire, between 5 PM and 8 PM on January 1.

Armstrong, 35, was arrested near Henley-in-Arden train station by Warwickshire Police just before noon today after a member of the public alerted authorities.

Washbourne, 40, was captured by officers around 1:30 AM today in Bristol city center.

Washbourne was initially taken to the hospital after officers discovered him with pre-existing injuries but is now also in police custody, according to Avon and Somerset Police.

Additionally, Armstrong has been arrested on suspicion of robbery, according to law enforcement.

This arrest is linked to an incident that occurred in a village near Leyhill at approximately 6:45 PM on New Year’s Eve.

Authorities also confirmed that a third individual suspected of escaping was arrested by Avon and Somerset Police in Bristol on Saturday.

The 39-year-old has since been charged with escaping lawful custody and appeared in court on Monday, January 5.

He is scheduled to appear at Bristol Crown Court in February, according to the police.

Earlier, law enforcement released CCTV footage of the inmates in an effort to aid in their capture.

The police had warned members of the public who might encounter the escaped prisoners to avoid them and immediately call 999.

Police described Armstrong as white, approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall, with ginger hair and scars on his forehead.

Washbourne was described by police as white, about 5 feet 6 inches tall, slim, with brown hair and clean-shaven.
