The 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, Prince Adewole Adebayo, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take decisive action against the terrorists terrorizing Nigeria or to submit his resignation.
Adebayo made this statement during his address at the National Electoral Reforms Summit on Tuesday in Abuja.
His remarks followed the recent designation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern by United States President Donald Trump, who threatened potential military intervention due to the reported killings of Christians.
In response, Adebayo suggested that Nigerians should commend President Trump for his concern regarding the situation in the country.
He emphasized that a nation's sovereignty will be disregarded if it conflicts with international humanitarian laws.
“Where was sovereignty when President Bola Ahmed expressed intentions to invade Niger? If he can contemplate invading Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso due to coups, why shouldn’t someone consider intervening in Nigeria, given that he is neglecting his own people?
“Let’s hold our government accountable for our protection. We should appreciate the international community for advocating on our behalf. However, if we choose to address the issues internally, both Muslims and Christians must unite. We cannot ignore that certain communities in Nigeria feel threatened by genocide. This is a serious concern. Over the past two years, they have raised funds to build around 50 churches. I have witnessed over 1,000 deaths. In Nigeria, the issue of genocide should not be up for debate. If your citizens are dying in large numbers, you have failed in the fundamental duty of governance.
“The resolution to this crisis is that President Tinubu can either take action against the terrorists or resign from his position.”
