Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has urged the Federal Government to promptly cease all military collaboration with the United States in light of the recent reports of US airstrikes.
Gumi cautioned that American involvement could exacerbate Nigeria’s security issues and compromise national sovereignty.
He made this appeal in a statement shared on his Facebook page on Friday.
He stated that while Islam allows for the fight against terrorism, such actions should only be carried out by those he refers to as having “clean hands,” arguing that the United States lacks the moral standing to lead such initiatives due to its historical military actions worldwide.
The cleric asserted that Nigeria erred by permitting foreign powers to engage in its counterterrorism efforts, maintaining that “terrorists do not genuinely combat terrorists” and warning that such interventions frequently lead to civilian casualties and hidden political agendas.
Gumi warned that permitting Nigeria to transform into a battleground would invite anti-US factions into the nation, further destabilizing it.
He also highlighted that US involvement, particularly under the guise of protecting Christians, could create divisions within the country along religious lines.
The cleric further claimed that airstrikes alone are insufficient to eradicate terrorism, emphasizing that effective counterterrorism necessitates robust ground operations, which he believes Nigeria has sufficient personnel to execute if organized properly.
“This is the error Nigeria has committed. Terrorists do not genuinely combat terrorists; they may only harm innocent individuals and have ulterior motives behind the facade of fighting ‘terror’.
“As a fundamental principle, no nation should permit its territory to become a battleground. Additionally, no nation should allow its neighbors to become adversaries.
“If Nigeria seeks military support, countries like China, Turkey, and Pakistan can effectively fulfill that role,” part of his statement concluded.
