The US president took to Truth Social overnight as he praised the US military for the “decimation of Iran,” before adding the war is “to be continued”.
Trump later said he and Xi agree the war must come to an end in the Middle East and that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon.
He added that both nations want to reopen the Strait of Hormuz as soon as possible.
China’s President Xi took Trump on a grand tour of Zhongnanhai – a heavily guarded compound where Beijing’s top leaders live and work.
Speaking to the media after the private walking tour, Xi promised to send Trump some seeds so he could grow the Chinese roses he has admired all trip.
Xi did not comment on Iran.
But an eager Trump did jump in and admit peace negotiations with Tehran have proved tricky as their delegation is “a little bit crazy”.
China’s Foreign Ministry steered clear of making any direct demands to Iran in a statement after the tour.
They said: “China’s position on the situation in Iran is very clear.
“This conflict has already caused severe losses to the people of countries in the region, including Iran, and its spillover effects continue to expand.
“There is no justification for this conflict, which should never have occurred, to continue.
“Finding a solution as soon as possible would be in the interests of both the US and Iran, as well as the countries in the region and the world at large.”
While not strictly allies, Beijing and Tehran do work under a “comprehensive strategic partnership agreement”.
The Iranian foreign minister even visited Beijing just days before Trump touched down in the capital.
