Strait talking

IN his latest salvo at Nato, Donald Trump dismissed the alliance as a “paper tiger”.

says many things — but his threat to should be taken deadly seriously.

He has a long-standing position that its members spend nowhere near enough on defence and rely on America to keep Europe safe.

On this, Trump is right.

Our own Government talks endlessly about the need to be “war-ready”, then provides pitiful funding to the Armed Forces — preferring to lavish record tax receipts on welfare instead.

With Trump’s latest blast still ringing in the Government’s ears, held a Zoom summit on the need to re-open the Strait of Hormuz.

Nothing concrete came from it — perfectly proving Trump’s point that Nato is good at talking, but that’s about all.

Many in Britain do not take kindly to Trump’s lectures — he recently had to apologise for appallingly ill-judged comments about the sacrifices our troops made in Afghanistan.

But we DO need to persuade the President of our commitment to Nato, and to keep the US engaged as a member.

must resist his instinct to cosy up to Brussels, and pretend some kind of European army might be a future solution.

It would never have the muscle to confront the huge threat posed by Russia or China.

What the PM must do is set out a clear plan to make our defences fit for purpose which Trump and all the world can see.

Eco-zealot Ed

WAS it the hope of greater tax revenue that persuaded Rachel Reeves the Government in the North Sea?

’s declaration is a significant victory for common sense.

It has also highlighted just what a one-man barrier eco-zealot Ed Miliband is when it comes to doing what is necessary to shield voters from the economic shocks of the Iran conflict.

Starmer likes to say he will do whatever it takes to protect the national interest.

That means forcing Miliband to back down — or firing him.

Sickening greed

LABOUR’S damaging assumption that it was the Tories causing the long-running resident doctors’ strike died months ago.

It was always the greedy and power-crazed Marxist militants at the BMA driving this dispute.

Handing them a 29 per cent pay rise last year was a bad mistake.

But now that public support for the medics is evaporating, Sir Keir Starmer should take of another overly generous offer as a declaration of war.

This is a chance for the PM to show real leadership . . . and crush a union which callously puts pay ahead of the sick.
