Nigerian troops under Operation Hadin Kai have repelled an attack by ISWAP fighters on a military base in Azir, Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State.

Sources told security analyst Zagazola Makama that the attack occurred in the early hours of Friday, when the terrorists attempted to breach the base’s defensive lines.
The soldiers responded with heavy fire, supported by air assets from the Nigerian Air Force.

The report stated that the terrorists were forced back after more than an hour of fighting, with airstrikes targeting those attempting to flee the area.

Although rocket-propelled grenade fire damaged some troop vehicles, the soldiers retained control of the base.

Following the clash, troops recovered several weapons and ammunition abandoned by the attackers. These included a 60mm mortar tube, mortar bombs, locally made explosives, heavy machine gun rounds, and hundreds of 7.62mm NATO bullets.

The operation extended beyond the base as surveillance platforms tracked the fleeing fighters, leading to follow-up air operations along their escape routes.

Sources said that at about 1:40 am, air force aircraft were deployed to support ground troops. Upon reaching Azir, the aircrew observed soldiers firing towards the terrorists’ withdrawal paths.

The sources added that the aircrew later spotted fighters regrouping under trees and carried out repeated strikes on them.

According to the sources, “the operation achieved its intended effect, with many terrorists neutralised and their ability to reorganise or mount further attacks in the area significantly degraded.”

They added that subsequent scans confirmed no remaining threats in the area.
