The Nigerian Army has dismissed reports alleging that soldiers are threatening mutiny over salaries and allowances, describing the claims as false, misleading and capable of undermining national security.

In a statement on Monday, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, said the report to that regard in the media, not by DAILY POST, was based on anonymous and unverifiable sources and did not reflect the position or conduct of officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army.

According to Anele, there has been no threat of mutiny within the Army, stressing that mutiny remains a grave offence under military law and is contrary to the service’s ethos of discipline, professionalism and loyalty to the Constitution and the Commander-in-Chief.

“The attention of the Nigerian Army has been drawn to an online publication alleging that soldiers are threatening mutiny over salaries and allowances. We view the report as false, misleading and deliberately sensational, designed to undermine public confidence and national security.

“At no time has there been any threat of mutiny within the Nigerian Army. Mutiny is a grave offence under military law and alien to the ethos, discipline and professionalism of Nigerian Army personnel, who remain loyal to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces,” part of the statement read.

She explained that grievances within the military are addressed through established internal procedures, not through public or unofficial platforms.

The Army further clarified that promotion increments represent only a fraction of military remuneration, noting that soldiers’ earnings also include consolidated salaries, rank-based allowances, operational, field and hardship allowances, as well as other entitlements that depend on deployment, qualifications and responsibilities.

Anele said the Nigerian Army, working with the Armed Forces of Nigeria and relevant government agencies, is implementing structured welfare reforms aimed at improving troop welfare. These, she noted, include periodic salary reviews, enhanced operational allowances, improved accommodation, medical services and insurance packages for personnel and their families.

The Army also stated that the Federal Government, under President Bola Tinubu, has remained committed to the welfare and operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces, particularly in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.
