FLORIAN WIRTZ was offered to Real Madrid before his mammoth £116million move to Liverpool last summer.

But the Germany international’s agent, Volker Struth, hasn’t given up hope of sealing a Bernabeu transfer for the midfielder.

A reunion with former Bayer Leverkusen boss was on the cards for Wirtz, 22, before he briefly became the Reds’ most expensive player last June.

But despite Struth’s personal plea to Los Blancos president , the giants didn’t end up making a move for his star client.

He said: “During the period when a move to Liverpool or Bayern was being discussed, I called Xabi Alonso and told him, ‘You have to take the lad from Leverkusen with you to Real.’

“Xabi replied, ‘You don’t have to tell me that, you have to tell Florentino Perez.’

“So I actually sent him a message: ‘Dear Florentino, I’ve told you many times before: I have a player here whom I would highly recommend. makes every team in the world better.'”

Struth reckons Liverpool wouldn’t have got their hands on Wirtz had Real had enough cash in the bank.

He told Bild : “That year, it simply wasn’t the right time due to the squad and the budget.

“Even Real Madrid’s coffers aren’t always overflowing. But my wish remains that Florian will play there one day.”

Wirtz struggled to justify his massive price tag in the early goings of the season.

But he’s shown glimpses of his Leverkusen form in recent months, scoring six goals and providing eight assists in 35 appearances this campaign.

Wirtz and his Kop team-mates will be back in action on Saturday, welcoming West Ham to Anfield.
