Arsenal legend Sol Campbell has criticised the club’s decision to sign Noni Madueke from Chelsea, insisting the Gunners do not need the English player.
Campbell has called on the North London side to explain to their supporters why they believe the player is an important signing at this time.
Arsenal and Chelsea have already reached an agreement for the deal that would see the player leave West London for North London in the coming hours.
Mikel Arteta’s side has reportedly paid £52 million to sign the English forward, although the move is yet to be officially confirmed.
However, as news of the agreement emerged, Gunners supporters expressed their displeasure with the move and launched an online petition under the hashtag #NOTOMADUEKE.
It is true that Arsenal are in need of a new left-sided forward this summer, but Madueke typically plays on the right.
Campbell told The Metro that signing the 23-year-old was unnecessary.
“I think most people are probably thinking, ‘Do we need him?’
“I think the club needs to explain why they’re getting certain players in and how it’s going to fit into our system.
“It’s important to explain that to the players and the fans.”;
Arsenal have already signed Spanish goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea this summer.
