The White House on Friday said US President Donald Trump is optimistic about reaching a trade deal with China.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt made this statement amid an escalating trade war between the two economic giants that has battered markets.

“The president has made it very clear he's open to a deal with China,” Leavitt told a press briefing.

“If China continues to retaliate, it is not good for China,” she added.

“Taking on China, in terms of trade and tariffs, is something that both Democrats and Republicans alike have spoken about for decades. President Trump is finally doing it.”

In early April, Trump's administration increased tariffs on Chinese imports, escalating trade tensions between the two countries.

Trump then announced a 125% tariff on Chinese goods, citing China’s “lack of respect”; in trade relations.

Additionally, a 20% “fentanyl tariff”; was imposed on specific imports, bringing the total tariffs on certain Chinese products to 145%.

In retaliation, China raised tariffs on US imports from 84% to 125%, effective Saturday, April 12, 2025.
