The UN Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed, remarked that she has not heard President Bola Tinubu express any grievances regarding the challenges he faced upon taking office from his predecessor.
Mohammed made this statement during an award dinner at Nigeria House in New York, held to commemorate Nigeria’s 65th independence anniversary and the Independence Day Parade and Carnival.
The Nigerian-born UN deputy chief also noted that President Tinubu worked diligently to attain his position, despite asserting that it was his turn.
According to her, as of now, Tinubu is the president of Nigeria, emphasizing that it was God who placed him in this role.
“He has also mentioned that he wouldn’t complain about what he inherited. I have not heard him voice any complaints. While those around him may express discontent regarding his inheritance, he does not,” she stated.
“It is, therefore, our responsibility to support him and contribute positively to Nigeria’s progress. Unless you are suggesting that God made a mistake,” she added.
She also congratulated Nigeria and its citizens on the 65th independence anniversary, expressing optimism for the country's future.
Mohammed urged for collective efforts to build the nation rather than undermine it, stating, “If we fall into a cycle of negativity, who will be there to uplift us?”
“What message are we sending to our children? What message are we conveying to potential partners?”
“If we are the first to declare that we are inadequate or unworthy, I sincerely hope we can change that narrative. This is because Nigerians are among the hardest working, most ambitious, and proud individuals,” she concluded.
