President Bola Tinubu on Monday expressed his sorrow over the passing of Rev Uma Ukpai, whom he referred to as “one of God’s generals.”

Tinubu stated that Ukpai was more than just a preacher; he was an “anointed crusader of the faith, filled with passion and dedication for the gospel and committed to restoring humanity through discipline, love, and good neighborliness.”

Dr Ukpai, who passed away at the age of 80, was a renowned international evangelist, the leader of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association, and a founding member of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN).

In a statement he personally signed, Tinubu highlighted that Ukpai was born in the small town of Asaga, Ohafia, in Abia State, and that he faced numerous challenges while pursuing his education. However, he emphasized that God had a distinct purpose for him. Ukpai heeded the divine call and made a significant impact on generations through his ministry.

Tinubu remarked: “He was a leader in the Lord’s army who ignited the fervor of revival that swept across Nigeria and parts of Africa in the 1980s. He was truly a firebrand.”

Tinubu reminisced about the Greater Ibadan for Christ crusade in 1982 and the Greater Lagos for Christ crusade in 1985, calling them two remarkable events in terms of both scale and influence.

He further added: “Dr Ukpai’s mission was clearly aimed at uniting the Christian community and various faiths to promote peace and harmony. He was a builder, constructing relationships and bridges among different faiths, peoples, languages, and tribes.”

“He was also a humanitarian, establishing numerous charities, schools, and hospitals for those in need.”

“Dr Ukpai has completed his divine mission and has returned to be with the Lord. He fought the good fight, finished the race, and maintained his faith.”

“I pray that God Almighty grants him eternal rest. I extend my condolences to his family, particularly his wife, Pastor Philomena Uma Ukpai, and his children, as well as the members of his ministry. I encourage them to find comfort in the remarkable legacy of this beloved servant of God.”
