Tinubu has what it takes to end farmers-herders crisis – Jega

Published on July 01, 2025 at 09:16 AM

Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Livestock Reforms, Prof Attahiru Jega, has expressed confidence in the president’s capacity to end Nigeria’s long-standing farmers-herders crisis if the right reforms are implemented with support from relevant stakeholders.

Jega stated this at a distinguished personality lecture with the theme: The Political Economy of Livestock Development in Nigeria: Challenges and Prospects, at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Kwara State, on Monday.

DAILY POST reports that the lecture was part of activities commemorating the university’s 50th anniversary and was held in honour of Senator Saliu Mustapha.

The former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) described the increasing clashes between farmers and herders as a product of worsening land pressure, climate change, and poor governance of natural resources, issues that need to be tackled as part of broader livestock sector reforms.

“President Tinubu has demonstrated the willingness and capacity to solve this crisis. What is needed now is stakeholder support, especially from the National Assembly, security agencies, and state actors, to implement evidence-based reforms,”; he said.
