Tinubu directs inclusion of all former governors in new Benue committee of elders

Published on June 18, 2025 at 06:19 PM

President Bola Tinubu has directed that a newly established Committee of Elders for Benue State must include all former governors and the current Governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Sule.

This was revealed in a post on Wednesday by Sunday Dare, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, on his X account.

Recounting parts of the president’s directive, Dare, who is a member of the presidential delegation that recently visited communities affected by the latest wave of killings, added that President Tinubu urged Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State to work with all stakeholders and act as a father to everyone in the state, regardless of political or ethnic differences.

He further stated that President Tinubu appealed to the people of Benue to unite and cooperate with the government in finding lasting solutions to the crisis.

According to reports, the tragic attack in Yelewata village left over 200 persons dead, with several injured, and hundreds displaced.

The President emphasised the need for traditional rulers to collaborate closely with the state government to maintain peace and order. He also instructed Governor Alia to secure land for ranching as a measure to address one of the root causes of the conflict.

He said the new Committee of Elders, now expanded to include all past governors and the Governor of Nasarawa State, is expected to play a critical advisory and mediatory role in the peace process.”;
