Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu arrived in Rome on Sunday to take part in the Aqaba Process Heads of State and Government Level Meeting, which will address the security crisis in West Africa.
The presidential aircraft is reported to have landed at Rome Fiumicino International Airport at approximately 7:20 PM.
A statement released on Saturday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, indicated that the meeting will commence on Tuesday. It is expected to gather Heads of State and Government, senior intelligence and military officials from various African nations, as well as representatives from intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations to discuss the evolving security challenges in West Africa.
According to DAILY POST, the Aqaba Process is a counter-terrorism initiative launched in 2015 by King Abdullah II of Jordan, co-chaired by Jordan and Italy, aimed at enhancing global cooperation against terrorism and violent extremism.
The statement further noted that the 2025 session will focus on the increasing threats in West Africa, including the expansion of terrorist networks, the crime-terror nexus, and the intersection of land-based insurgencies in the Sahel with maritime piracy in the Gulf of Guinea.
“During the meeting, participants will share assessments of the current security landscape in West Africa and promote collaboration among regional and international partners to tackle cross-border security issues.
“Participants will also formulate strategies to combat the terror threat both on land and at sea. The meeting will explore approaches to coordinate efforts against online radicalization and disrupt digital networks that enable terrorist propaganda and recruitment.
“In addition to participating in the plenary sessions of the Aqaba meeting, President Tinubu will engage in bilateral discussions with other leaders to explore solutions to the escalating security challenges across the subregion,” it concluded.
