Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Monday condemned the actions of residents who risked their lives by scooping fuel leaking from an overturned tanker at Liverpool Bridge in Apapa, describing the behaviour as dangerous and irresponsible.
The governor expressed concern that safety was ignored during the incident, warning that such actions could easily result in loss of lives.
He, however, praised the prompt intervention of emergency responders and security agencies, particularly the police, for quickly securing the scene and preventing further danger.
Sanwo-Olu cautioned residents against repeating such conduct, stressing that public safety must always take precedence over material gain.
Addressing broader issues of indiscipline, the governor decried the persistent problem of indiscriminate waste disposal, especially the dumping of refuse on road medians.
He disclosed that tougher sanctions would be enforced this year, adding that the Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, had been directed to apprehend offenders as a deterrent to others.
On the ongoing demolition exercise in Makoko, Sanwo-Olu clarified that residents affected by structures located between 150 and 250 metres of high-tension power lines had been issued evacuation notices more than two years before the exercise commenced.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property, assuring that affected residents would receive support in the form of palliatives and relocation assistance.
The governor reiterated that his government remains resolute in taking all necessary measures to safeguard the wellbeing of Lagos residents and maintain public safety across the state.
