An England insider said: “Most of the players who have children spent virtually the whole of Friday with their families.

“Cards and gifts were handed over which would be opened as a surprise on Father’s Day, which would have given them all a lift. The mood in the camp is determined and the players are all ready to give their all, but it’s good for them to de-stress.”

Captain — two- goal hero of the Croatia win — was understood to be one of the stars looking forward to opening cards from his kids today.

But the Bayern Munich goal machine was one of the few players not to meet his children, Ivy, nine, Vivienne, seven, Louis, five, and two-year-old Henry.
