Former presidential candidate and activist, Omoyele Sowore, has disclosed how protesters were reportedly assaulted during the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow demonstration in Abuja.
Earlier, DAILY POST reported that security personnel discharged shots and deployed tear gas at the protest site on Monday morning.
In an interview with Channels TV, Sowore clarified that there was no prior provocation from the protesters before the alleged assault.
He confirmed that Aloy Ejimakor, the attorney representing Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), was beaten and apprehended by the police.
According to him, both the lawyer and Kanu’s brother were physically attacked by the police before their arrest.
He stated, “We initiated the protest in front of the Transcop hotel, and security personnel, including the army, police, and civil defense, arrived. I began informing them that we are not adversaries and that the protest is not directed against them. Suddenly, they began firing tear gas at us, and some live rounds were discharged.
“Fortunately, no one was struck by the bullets, but they were shooting all around us. Eventually, they took some individuals into custody. I learned that Nnamdi Kanu’s brother was arrested and assaulted.
“The lawyer, Ejimakor, was also apprehended and beaten before they were transported to the FCT command.
“It was an unprovoked assault by the police force.”
