A bystander captured the moment of impact in a horrific video, showing the blue sky of the palm tree-lined street suddenly engulfed in billowing smoke clouds.

As the smoke grows bigger, a fireball suddenly erupts from the truck.

The camera shakes as the witness runs for their life away from the explosion.

They stop at the end of the street and turn back to see the fire still burning, as more people run out onto the road to investigate the damage.

Carabineros police force boss Victor Vielma said an investigation was underway to determine the cause of the crash.

Seven smaller vehicles in a nearby parking lot were also caught up in the fiery explosion.

A witness told 24 Horas that a loud noise made them leave their homes to help those affected by the flames.

“We couldn’t get people out of the cars, but we were able to rescue one or two people who were burned on the pavement,” he said.

Santiago firefighters, Carabineros police and emergency medical service workers are at the scene attending to those injured in the incident.

It follows the leaving at least three dead in Mexico.

Terrifying video footage of the moment a gas truck blew up on a major highway has been posted to social media, as the incident was classified as an “emergency”.

Multiple videos have surfaced online, showing a wall of flames spread through the air, engulfing everything in its path.

Terror-stricken witnesses fled the scene as thousands of litres of gasoline ignited on the major road in Mexico City.

The explosion left smoke and flames mushrooming around the vehicle, later billowing out across the south of the capital city.

Three people have died and at least 70 others are injured, including the truck driver.
