WEDDINGS can be expensive – but one bride and groom has come under fire for asking guests to pay for their special day.
The couple had put up a sign at the asking attendees to buy raffle tickets throughout the day.

“Every ticket you buy helps make our wedding day even more memorable.
“Thank you for your love and support.”
The raffle tickets cost $5 (£3.81) for one, with discounted bulk pricing available, such as 5 tickets for $20 (£15.25), 10 tickets for $40 (£30.50), and 25 tickets for $100 (£76.26).
The bride and groom’s money-making scheme was shared on Reddit but one baffled person, who saw them later putting the sign up for sale after their big day.
The baffled person wrote: “Wedding raffle board for sale on marketplace.
“An alternative to the dollar dance, I guess?
“I do hope lots of tickets were sold so the wedding day could be memorable.”
Many people were quick to comment on the idea – and not everyone was a fan.
One wrote: “I won a 50/50 at a stag and doe for the couple. The crowd pressured me to ‘donate’ my winnings back to the couple.”
Another added: “Why are such a grift now? Just have the wedding you can afford. Not the one that is going to get you instagram votes.”
And a third commented: “I went to a wedding where the bride and groom did this. It was unbelievably tacky.
“My MIL won the raffle (everyone was heavily pressured to buy tickets), and the mother of the bride promptly came up to MIL and told her she was supposed to donate the proceeds back.”
This follows one bride and groom and made £97,000 profit.
We shared how one user revealed they made to at the reception of their friend’s , and the worst part is they had no idea beforehand.
The guest admitted that the couple, both in their 30s, were more like “good acquaintances” rather than friends, but he accepted the invitation anyway and looked forward to celebrating with them.
The whole day was a pretty low-key affair, with the ceremony held at the local courthouse.
“I didn’t expect any form of party after the courthouse, because that’s just how they are and that’s fine,” the guest explained.
But to their surprise there was a meal afterwards, and the groom even ordered appetisers for everyone, something the guest thought was a nice gesture.
Budget-Friendly Wedding Tips
PLANNING a wedding on a budget doesn't mean you have to sacrifice your dream day. Here are some tips to keep costs down while still creating a memorable celebration:
Set a Budget and Stick to It
- Determine your total budget early on and allocate funds to different aspects of the wedding.
- Track all expenses to avoid overspending.
Limit the Guest List
- Keep your guest list intimate to reduce costs on catering, venue, and other per-person expenses.
Choose an Affordable Venue
- Consider non-traditional venues like parks, community halls, or a family member’s backyard.
- Look for venues that allow you to bring your own vendors.
DIY Decorations
- Create your own centerpieces, bouquets, and other décor items.
- Use seasonal flowers and simple, elegant designs.
Opt for a Weekday or Off-Season Wedding
- Venues and vendors often offer discounts for weekday or off-season weddings.
Simplify the Menu
- Choose a buffet or family-style meal over a plated dinner.
- Limit the number of courses and opt for affordable, yet delicious options.
Borrow or Rent Attire
- Borrow wedding attire from friends or family, or rent dresses and suits.
- Look for sales or consider pre-owned wedding dresses.
Digital Invitations
- Send digital invitations instead of printed ones to save on printing and postage costs.
Hire a DJ or Create a Playlist
- Hire a DJ instead of a live band, or create your own playlist for the reception.
Simplify the Cake
- Opt for a small, simple cake for the ceremonial cutting and serve a sheet cake to guests.
By being mindful of these tips, you can create a beautiful and memorable wedding without breaking the bank. Remember, the focus should be on celebrating your love and commitment, not on how much you spend.
