It is believed he took his own life, but an investigation will look into the full circumstances surrounding his death.

Bell was remanded in custody for the alleged assault on a child at the Loch Ness Bay Campsite near Drumnadrochit on July 31, which occurred between midnight and 1 a.m.

An eight-year-old boy was alone in his tent when he was sexually assaulted.

The boy’s father was awakened by his son's cries and witnessed the alleged attacker fleeing into the woods.

The horrific incident prompted a large police manhunt, and Bell was charged on September 1.

He did not enter a plea when he appeared at Inverness Sheriff Court, facing charges under the Sexual Offences Act 2009.

Bell was remanded for further examination and continued to be held in custody.

An investigation is currently underway into his death, and Bell’s next of kin have been notified.

His death will be reported to the Procurator Fiscal, and a Fatal Accident Inquiry will be conducted to examine the circumstances.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Prison Service stated: “Every death, whether in prison custody or in our communities, is a tragedy for all those who knew and supported the individual.”

“Following the death of someone in our care, Police Scotland are notified, and the matter is reported to the Procurator Fiscal.”

“Fatal Accident Inquiries are conducted in due course.”
