The hosts were gifted the lead in the first half as Anthony Gordon punished Luke O’Nien’s poor clearance.
But the Black Cats hit back in the second half as Chemsdine Talbi fired past Aaron Ramsdale after the Magpies failed to clear from a corner.
Newcastle thought they had retaken the lead as Malick Thiaw headed home but the goal was ruled out for an offside on Jacob Murphy.
The decision would prove costly as Brian Brobbey was able to turn home his sixth of the season in the 89th minute.
