Abigail Eggleston, a student at the University, was struck by a vehicle shortly before 2 a.m. on Sunday.
The 22-year-old law student was crossing the road at Neville’s Cross in Durham when the car collided with her.
The North East Ambulance Service rushed her to the hospital with severe head and chest injuries, but she sadly passed away shortly thereafter.
Abigail is survived by her mother, father, sister, grandmother, grandfather, boyfriend, and Spencer, her beloved cat.
Her devastated family shared an emotional tribute to their “ray of sunshine.” They expressed: “Abi, a deeply loved and cherished daughter, sister, granddaughter, and girlfriend.
“You were on a path to conquer the world, diligently studying for your law degree while exploring life’s adventures. Such a beautiful, kind, and determined individual; we will always be incredibly proud of you.
“Always willing to help others with your boundless love, advice, and encouragement, you selflessly prioritized others' happiness over your own.
“A constant ray of sunshine, you always looked on the bright side of life, sharing your warm glow with everyone fortunate enough to know and love you.
“Wise beyond your years, we have learned invaluable life lessons from you, and we strive to remain strong and make you proud.
“You have been cruelly taken from us far too soon, leaving a profound void in our lives; life will never be the same without you.”
“Rest in peace, precious angel. The only comfort we have is knowing we will meet again.”
Abigail’s family expressed gratitude to Durham and members of the public who assisted and offered support during this incredibly challenging time.
Nathan Sempala-Ntege, Principal of John Snow College at Durham University, honored the “talented” and “kind” student.

“Abigail cherished her time at Durham and had a diverse group of friends throughout the university, all of whom will miss her dearly.
“We continue to provide full support to any students or staff who have been personally affected by Abigail’s passing.”
